Bacon's rebellion, Virginia, 1676-1677: Lydia, the wife of the rebel Edmund Cheeseman, faints as he is condemned for treason by the governor of Virginia, William Berkeley; a toothless old lady is restrained from attacking her. Coloured etching by Alfred Bobbet [sic] after Felix O.C. Darley. Keywords: Alfred Bobbett; Darley "When Edmund Cheesman [sic] was arraigned before the governor, and he was asked why he engaged in Bacon's wicked scheme, before he could answer, his young wife stepped forward and said: 'My provocations made my husband join in the cause for which [Nathaniel] Bacon contended ; but for me, he had never done what he has done. Since what is done,' she said, as she fell upon her knees in an attitude of supplication, with her head bowed and covered with her hands, 'was done by my means, I am most guilty ; let me bear the punishment ; let me be hanged, but let my husband be pardoned.' The governor angrily cried out: 'Away with you!' and added a brutal insinuation against her virtue. The poor young wife fainted, and her husband was led to the gallows."[1] |
